Is it just me or does it seem like everyone is sick lately? This cold season has been a brutal one and the colds just seem to last and last and last. I had it bad for over a month!! No matter how much medicine I took or how many Juice Bar immunity shots I suffered through, I couldn't seem to get better. It wasn't until our family trip to Hawaii that I was finally able to recover, and I attribute this turnaround to a few things - lots of sleep, nice warm weather, tons of water, and fresh smoothies/juices every single day. Every morning, Mitch and I would go down to the juice bar and order a juice or smoothie to-go for our morning stroll along the beach. (That was the life!) I told Sophia, the smoothie guru, that I hadn't been feeling well, so she made me a special, off-the-menu concoction full of ginger, citrus, and serious cayenne. It was SO spicy, but so good, and exactly what I needed. It perked me right up, cleared my sinuses, and made me feel amazing. Since coming home, I've tried to attempt Sophia's smoothie multiple times, and after throwing in a few smoothie necessities (chia seeds & coconut oil), I think this one is perfect.
You should 100% make this smoothie. Make it when you're feeling great or when you're under the weather - either way it will be the perfect pick-me-up. If you're not convinced, here's a few more reasons to gulp down this smoothie ASAP . . . the lemon and orange provide your full daily dose of Vitamin C, the chia seeds provide fiber, healthy fat, and protein, cayenne is an anti-cold and detoxing powerhouse, coconut oil is the perfect source of healthy fat (gotta eat fat to lose fat!), and ginger is great for digestion and fighting infection. Sheesh! That's one powerful smoothie!
Juice of 1 lemon
2 inch piece of fresh ginger (or more if you love ginger!)
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp raw honey
1 tbsp coconut oil
3 shakes of ground cayenne pepper (add more for extra spicy!)
1 cup water
Put all ingredients in a blender and whirl away! Taste test to see if you want to add extra ginger or cayenne. I'd recommend both if you're not feeling well! Enjoy!
